Ramadan started on April 24, 2020, as per the announcement of UAE’s moon-sighting committee and the holy month lasts for 29 or 30 days depending on Hijri or Islamic calendar. Eid Al Fitr is an important date marked in the Islamic calendar and a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims across the world. It indicates the end of the holy month of Ramadan, the month of fasting. The decision will be made on the evening of the 29th day of Ramadan by the moon-sighting committee, who is responsible for sighting the crescent moon. If the new moon is spotted the following morning will be announced as Eid Al Fitr which implies ‘festival of breaking fast’.
This year celebrations will be a bit different and are expected to be muted, with mosques closed and gatherings limited to not more than five persons in homes to prevent the spread of the deadly virus. Typically, celebrations last for 3 days. In recent years, it became a common type of practice to travel during Ramadan, but this year isn’t like usual because flights have stopped operating.
What do Muslims do During Ramadan?
It is customary for Muslims to wake up early in the morning and get ready in beautiful outfits and go to the mosque for special prayer during Eid. But this year the situation isn’t the same due to coronavirus, Muslims will be asked to stay at home and perform Eid prayers. As fasting will be completed, a light breakfast is preferred and then followed by a bigger lunch with the family.
Involve Yourself in Charity
It is also quite important that Muslims involve in charity to help the needy before Eid prayers. This is called ‘Zakat’ and the amount donated to charity is calculated based on one’s possessions. Muslims are required to walk to Eid prayers to forgive and forget any kind of arguments they had in the previous year.
